Tern PopCover
A pop-open cover built for the Tern BYB — slips over the folded bike in seconds, works in both fully-folded and handlebars-raised configurations, and stores in a flat pouch that attaches to the Metro Transit Rack. Roll the covered BYB through stations without exposing others to grease.
The Tern PopCover is a transit cover designed around the BYB's specific fold profile. It opens like a pop-up structure and slips over the folded bike — the cover expands into shape rather than requiring the bike to be threaded through an opening. Two modes are supported: fully folded (the BYB's most compact configuration) and handlebars-raised (a common intermediate position used for rolling through stations). In either mode, the cover contains the BYB's chain, tyres, and drivetrain to prevent grease transfer to transit seats, fellow passengers, and floors. At around 195g, the cover adds almost nothing to the bike's travelling weight. When not needed, it twists down and packs into a flat pouch that clips directly to the BYB's Metro Transit Rack — within reach the moment the bike enters a transit system.
Highlights
Pop-open deployment — cover in seconds
The PopCover opens automatically when released from its pouch — the nylon structure pops into shape rather than needing to be shaken out or spread. Slipping it over the folded BYB takes seconds: open the pouch, release the cover, slide it over the bike. The speed matters at a transit entry point where there's a gate to pass through, a crowd behind, and a train to catch. A cover that takes 30 seconds to deploy is effectively not used; one that takes 5 seconds gets used every time.
Dual mode — fully folded or handlebars raised
The BYB has two useful transit configurations: fully folded (smallest footprint, typically carried) and handlebars-raised (taller but allows the bike to be rolled on its wheels rather than carried). The PopCover accommodates both — the same cover fits in either position without needing adjustment or a different product. Rolling a covered BYB through a station on its wheels is significantly easier than carrying it, and the PopCover's handlebars-raised mode makes this possible while keeping the bike covered.
Metro Transit Rack storage — always on the bike
The PopCover's flat storage pouch attaches directly to the BYB's Metro Transit Rack — the rack that comes with or is fitted to the BYB for transit use. The cover is always on the bike, not in a separate bag or at home. At transit entry, it comes off the rack, pops open, and goes over the bike without any additional steps. When the covered stage ends, the cover twists back into its flat pouch and re-attaches to the rack before riding continues.
Water-resistant — handles rain at transit entrances
The nylon cover is water-resistant — light rain at transit station entrances and covered outdoor platforms won't soak through immediately. The primary function is grease containment, not waterproofing, but the water-resistant fabric means the cover stays functional in the typical British or West Coast Canadian rain encountered while moving between transit modes.
PopCover vs CarryOn Cover — BYB owners
Both covers are $90 and made from nylon. The PopCover is BYB-specific — shaped for the BYB's fold, stores on the Metro Transit Rack, and supports the handlebars-raised rolling mode. The CarryOn Cover ($90) fits most other Tern folding bikes, covers without lifting, and stores via seatpost, stem, rack, or under-seat attachment. If you have a BYB, the PopCover is the purpose-built choice. For any other Tern folding bike, the CarryOn Cover is the appropriate option.
