Tern Dog Roof Mini
The convertible roof panel for the Tern Doghouse Mini system — two windows zip open and roll up for open-air riding, close fully for weather protection. Mesh side panels for ventilation. Fits dogs up to 13.5 kg. Requires Soft Crate Mini and Clubhouse Mini.
The Tern Dog Roof Mini is the roof component of the Doghouse Mini system — a complete on-bike pet carrier for small to mid-sized dogs on the HSD, GSD, and other compatible Tern cargo bikes. The roof attaches to the Soft Crate Mini and converts it from an open-top carrier to a fully enclosed, weather-protected crate. Two zippered windows in the roof can be opened, rolled back, and tucked away for open-air riding — the dog sees the surroundings and gets airflow; the roof is out of the way. Zip both windows closed when rain arrives or at higher speeds where wind exposure is a concern. Mesh side panels remain in place in both configurations for continuous ventilation. The nylon construction cleans easily with a spray and wipe.
Highlights
Convertible windows — open-air or enclosed
The two roof windows zip open independently. Once unzipped, they roll back and tuck away — the roof stays in place but the openings are clear, giving the dog exposure to air and sightlines to the surroundings. Many dogs prefer open-air riding to enclosed travel. Both windows can be closed quickly if weather changes during a ride. The conversion between open and enclosed takes seconds without removing the roof from the crate.
Full closure — weather protection when needed
With both windows zipped shut, the Dog Roof Mini encloses the Soft Crate Mini completely — rain, wind, and road spray are blocked. A dog that is comfortable in enclosed spaces can ride in full weather protection. The roof combined with the crate sides creates a sheltered environment appropriate for light rain and cool conditions without the dog getting wet or cold.
Mesh side panels — continuous ventilation
Mesh panels in the sides of the roof (and crate) allow airflow independent of the window position. Even with both windows closed, the mesh prevents the crate from becoming a sealed, hot box — air moves through the mesh continuously. Ventilation is especially important when the dog is enclosed during warmer weather or on longer rides where heat builds up inside a small enclosed space.
13.5 kg dog limit — small to mid-sized breeds
The Doghouse Mini system accommodates dogs up to 13.5 kg (30 lb). This covers most small breeds and many medium breeds — Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and similar. Larger dogs or breeds that are not comfortable in enclosed spaces are not suited to the Doghouse Mini system. The 13.5 kg limit applies to the complete Doghouse Mini setup, not just the roof.
Doghouse Mini system — three components
The Doghouse Mini is a three-part system. The Clubhouse Mini mounts to the bike's cargo rack and provides the platform. The Soft Crate Mini is the flexible crate structure that sits on the Clubhouse Mini and holds the dog. The Dog Roof Mini attaches to the Soft Crate Mini to provide the roof and weather enclosure. All three are required for the complete setup — the roof alone does nothing without the crate and mounting platform underneath it.
Trained dogs — preparation matters
Tern recommends the Doghouse Mini for trained dogs and suggests consulting a veterinarian if unsure whether a dog is suitable for bike travel. A dog that is anxious, motion-sick, or reactive in confined spaces will not ride well in a crate on a cargo bike regardless of the crate quality. Dogs that are crate-trained and comfortable with car travel are typically the best candidates. Introduce the crate and bike environment gradually before attempting rides.
