Tern Shortbed Tray
A heavy-duty rear cargo tray for Tern cargo bikes — 35 kg capacity, fits standard 600×400 mm Eurocrates up to 80 L, mounts perpendicular or parallel on the GSD. Designed for serious daily cargo use: groceries, crates, coolers, equipment.
The Tern Shortbed Tray is a flat-bed rear cargo platform for Tern's cargo bike range — the GSD, HSD, Quick Haul, and Short Haul. At 35 kg it carries more than any other rack in the Tern accessory lineup, and its inner dimensions (425 × 607 mm) are sized to fit the industry-standard 600 × 400 mm Eurocrate, which opens up a large ecosystem of stackable crates up to 80 litres in capacity. Two SideStrap bungees are included for securing cargo that doesn't self-contain. On the GSD, the tray can be mounted either perpendicular to the frame (conventional orientation) or parallel along the frame length, giving more flexibility for different load shapes. The tray design allows battery access without removing the cargo platform.

The Shortbed Tray is rated for 35 kg — 10 kg more than the Cargo Rack, Trail Rack, and Loader Rack (all 25 kg). That extra headroom matters when loading full Eurocrates of groceries, sports equipment, or heavy cargo that approaches the limit on a 25 kg rack. The cargo bike frame geometry of the GSD, HSD, Quick Haul, and Short Haul is engineered to carry this kind of load stably.
Eurocrate compatible — standard 600×400 mm crates
The inner tray dimensions (425 × 607 mm) are sized to accept the industry-standard 600 × 400 mm Eurocrate footprint. Eurocrates are the stackable plastic crates used in grocery retail, catering, and logistics — up to 80 litres in the deepest sizes. A full-size grocery Eurocrate drops straight in and stays contained by the tray walls without straps.
Perpendicular or parallel orientation — GSD only
On the Tern GSD, the Shortbed Tray can be mounted in two orientations: perpendicular (tray width runs across the bike, conventional orientation) or parallel (tray length runs along the frame). Parallel mounting extends the effective cargo area along the bike's wheelbase rather than across it — useful for long items or when tray width clearance is a concern. Other compatible models (HSD, Quick Haul, Short Haul) support perpendicular only.
Battery access unobstructed
The tray is designed around the eBike battery position on the GSD and compatible cargo models — battery removal and installation are possible without lifting or removing the tray. On a daily-use eBike cargo bike, unobstructed battery access matters: charging away from the bike, hot-swapping for range, or removing before storage should not require unloading the rack first.
SideStrap bungees included — two in the box
Two Tern SideStrap bungee cords are included. They secure cargo that doesn't self-contain within a crate — loose bags, a rolled sleeping mat, equipment that overhangs the tray edges. The SideStraps clip to the tray walls rather than running across the top, keeping cargo accessible while secured.
Cargo bike platform — designed for this use case
The Shortbed Tray is designed for bikes that are intended to carry serious cargo loads daily: the GSD (Get Shit Done), HSD, Quick Haul, and Short Haul. These are cargo bikes, not utility bikes with racks added. The Shortbed Tray's 35 kg capacity and Eurocrate compatibility are appropriate for this context — it is not a suitable add-on for standard folding bikes.
