Tern Sidekick Doublewide Decks
Wide foldable side decks for the Tern GSD — 50 kg per side (100 kg combined with QuadStruts), 25 cm wide for bulky cargo, keeps loads low for stability, and doubles as passenger footrests. Requires Lockstand Extensions.
The Tern Sidekick Doublewide Decks are fold-out side platforms that mount on either side of the GSD's rear axle, extending the cargo and passenger capacity of the bike laterally. Each deck is 25 cm wide — the "Doublewide" designation — providing a substantially larger platform than standard Sidekick decks for bulky items, groceries in bags, or a passenger's feet. At 50 kg per side (100 kg combined when paired with Lockstand QuadStruts), they are rated for serious loads. The low mounting position keeps cargo close to the ground, reducing the high centre of gravity that a loaded rear rack introduces. The decks fold flat when not in use and can stow in front of or behind Cargo Hold 52 Panniers when both are on the bike.

100 kg combined with QuadStruts — 80 kg stock
Combined capacity depends on the kickstand: 80 kg with the GSD's stock kickstand, 100 kg when Lockstand QuadStruts are installed. The QuadStruts upgrade the kickstand to a four-point stance that distributes the additional load without tipping. If you're regularly loading near the 80 kg mark, QuadStruts are the safer pairing. Per-side rating is 50 kg in both configurations.
Low mounting — cargo stays close to the ground
The side deck position puts load at axle height — significantly lower than a rear rack platform. Lower cargo placement reduces the pendulum effect on a heavily loaded bike, keeping handling more predictable through corners and at low speeds. The GSD's frame is specifically engineered for this low-and-wide cargo loading position.
Foldable — stows flat when not in use
The decks fold up against the bike when not carrying cargo or passengers. Stows in front of or behind Cargo Hold 52 Panniers so pannier and deck use aren't mutually exclusive. Folded, they don't add significant width to the bike footprint for storage or filtering through traffic.
Passenger footrests — cargo and people
The decks serve as footrests when carrying a passenger on the GSD's rear cargo area. A child or small adult can stand or sit with feet on the Sidekick decks rather than dangling. Passenger use has additional safety requirements — Tern's Passenger Guide specifies which other accessories are required and should be read before carrying any passenger.
Lockstand Extensions — required, not optional
Lockstand Extensions must be installed before the Sidekick Doublewide Decks can be fitted. The extensions modify the GSD's kickstand geometry to accommodate the wider deck footprint. Without them, the decks cannot be properly mounted. If ordering the decks without already having Lockstand Extensions, both must be purchased together.
