Tern Sidekick Foot Pegs
A pair of retractable pegs that fold into the GSD Gen 1's frame and pop out with one push — the cheapest way to give a rear passenger somewhere to put their feet, with no cargo shelf and no published weight rating.
Most cargo-bike footrests are fixed platforms that stay bolted to the bike whether or not anyone is riding on the back. The Sidekick Foot Pegs take the opposite approach: each peg tucks into the GSD Gen 1's frame and swings out with a push when a passenger climbs on. That single design decision is what you are paying for. It keeps the bike clean and narrow on the days you ride alone, and it removes the two hard protrusions that a fixed footrest leaves at shin height in a crowded bike room. The trade-off is that a peg is only ever a place for a foot — it carries no cargo, works with no panniers, and Tern quotes no weight limit for it. At $35 the pair it is the least expensive entry into the Sidekick passenger system, and for a Gen 1 owner who occasionally carries one child it is often all that is needed.

Zinc alloy is dense and holds a cast shape well at a small size, which suits a hinged part that has to stay tight in its pivot after a few winters of salt and grit. It is heavier than aluminium, but at 444 g the pair that is not a number anyone will feel.

These are the two Gen 1 footrest options and they solve different problems. The Foot Pegs ($35 per pair) are for feet and nothing else: retractable, 444 g, invisible when folded. The Sidekick Lower Decks ($95 per pair) are shelves — 25 kg per deck, 50 kg across the pair — so they carry a passenger's feet and a grocery run, work under Cargo Hold panniers, and stay out permanently. Choose pegs if you carry a child occasionally and store the bike somewhere tight; choose decks if you want the low cargo space and a broader platform underfoot. On an HSD the equivalent is the Sidekick Footrests ($69 per set); on a GSD Gen 2 the decks are already in the frame and the upgrade is the Sidekick Wide Decks ($215 per pair).
