    Tern Sidekick Footrests

A pair of 5052 aluminium footrests for the HSD, rated at 25 kg each with a 3M anti-slip surface and slots for Batten Straps — the standard place for a passenger's feet on an HSD, and an HSD part only.

$69 CAD · per set of two

The "Gen 2" in the name is the accessory generation, not your bike's. These fit all HSD models across generations — but they fit the HSD only. They are not the Gen 2 footrest for a GSD, which is the mistake this naming invites. GSD Gen 1 owners want the Sidekick Foot Pegs ($35 per pair) or Sidekick Lower Decks ($95 per pair); GSD Gen 2 has decks built into the frame and upgrades with the Sidekick Wide Decks ($215 per pair). As always with the Passenger System, footrests alone do not make a bike ready for a child — see Tern's Passenger Guide for the seat, guard, and restraint requirements. 25 kg per footrest — 55 lb 2 × 25 kg across the pair All HSD every generation 0.5 kg per set — 1.1 lb

The HSD is Tern's compact cargo bike, short enough to live in an apartment and still carry a passenger on the rear rack. What the bare rack does not give that passenger is anywhere to put their feet. The Sidekick Footrests are the part that fixes it: a pair of 5052 aluminium platforms, each rated to 25 kg, that mount to the rack and sit alongside the rear wheel. Two details separate them from a plain bolt-on step. The tread is a 3M anti-slip layer rather than bare metal, which is what keeps a wet shoe planted in the rain. And each platform carries slots for Batten Straps, so when nobody is riding on the back the footrests become tie-down points for cargo on the rack. They are sized to work with the Sidekick Wheel Guard M and Cargo Hold Panniers, which is the usual HSD passenger setup — footrest, wheel guard, and panniers all on the same rack.

3M anti-slip tread for wet feet on wet metal

A bare aluminium plate in the rain is genuinely slippery, and a passenger's foot skidding off the rest is how a heel ends up near the spokes. The bonded 3M layer gives grip that a moulded texture in the metal cannot, and it works with the smooth-soled shoes children actually wear rather than only with proper boots.

Batten Strap slots turn them into tie-down points

On the days you are hauling boxes instead of a passenger, the footrests stop being dead weight. The built-in slots take Batten Straps, giving you two low anchor points either side of the rack for lashing awkward loads down. Most footrests are single-purpose; these earn their place on the bike full time.

5052 aluminium survives the spray path

5052 is the marine-grade alloy — its corrosion resistance is the reason it gets used on boat fittings. A footrest sits low on the bike, directly in the rear wheel's spray, and collects road salt all winter. The alloy choice is what stops it going chalky and seized in a Canadian February, and it keeps the set to 0.5 kg for the pair.

25 kg per side is rated for a passenger, not just a resting foot

A footrest takes real load whenever a passenger stands to absorb a bump or shifts their weight to one side, which happens constantly on rough pavement. Rating each platform at 25 kg means the rest is not the limiting factor for a child or a small adult — the rack's own passenger limit is. Check that figure for your HSD generation before assuming the pair sets your ceiling.

    Which footrest for which Tern

Tern splits this part by bike, and nothing crosses over. HSD, any generation: these Sidekick Footrests ($69 per set). GSD Gen 1: either the retractable Sidekick Foot Pegs ($35 per pair) for feet only, or the Sidekick Lower Decks ($95 per pair) if you want 25 kg of cargo shelf underneath as well. GSD Gen 2: the decks are already in the frame, so the upgrade is the Sidekick Wide Decks ($215 per pair) at 35 kg each. GSD Gen 3 and Tern's other cargo bikes: the Stow Decks ($234 per set), with five angle positions and front or rear mounting. Identify the bike first — the footrest follows from it.
