Tern Sidekick Joyride Bars Gen 3
A U-shaped seatpost-mounted handhold that wraps back toward the passenger — grip stays in reach while sitting further back, extended rails protect hands, and pairing with the Captain's Chair Gen 2 creates an enclosed cabin or cargo carrier.
The Tern Sidekick Joyride Bars Gen 3 are a seatpost-mounted passenger handhold with a U-shaped profile — the bars sweep back toward the passenger rather than standing upright at the seatpost. That geometry is the defining difference from the Sidekick Flat Bars: a passenger seated further back on the rear deck can still reach the grip comfortably, without leaning forward. Ergonomic grips reduce hand fatigue, and the extended rails wrap far enough to shield the passenger's hands from bumps and brushes. Paired with the Captain's Chair Gen 2, the Joyride Bars close off the front of the seat to form an enclosed cabin around the passenger — or a contained carrier for boxes and crates when running a cargo configuration. The clamp fits 30.9–34.9 mm seatposts, covering the Orox, GSD, HSD, Quick Haul, and Short Haul.
Highlights
U-shaped geometry — grip without leaning forward
A straight handhold at the seatpost forces the passenger to sit close and lean toward it. The Joyride Bars' U-shape extends the grip rearward, toward where the passenger actually sits — especially relevant on the Captain's Chair, where the seating position is further back on the deck. The passenger sits naturally against the seat and the grip meets their hands, rather than the other way around. Bigger kids and adults, with their longer torsos, benefit most from this geometry.
Enclosed cabin with the Captain's Chair Gen 2
The Captain's Chair provides the seat, backrest position, and side rails; the Joyride Bars close off the front. Together they surround the passenger on all sides — an enclosed cabin that gives a child a defined, contained space with grip points in every direction. In cargo mode, the same enclosure holds boxes or crates: the chair's structure at the back and sides, the Joyride Bars at the front, keeping cargo from sliding forward under braking.
Extended rails — hand protection built in
The rails extend beyond the grip position, so the passenger's hands sit inboard of the bar ends. In tight passages, alongside walls, or in the brush of a shared path, the rail takes the contact rather than fingers. It's the same principle as a handguard on a motorcycle lever — the structure reaches further than the hand it protects.
Seatpost mount — 30.9–34.9 mm, saddle height matters
The clamp fits seatposts from 30.9 to 34.9 mm — the range across the Orox, GSD, HSD, Quick Haul, and Short Haul. Because the bars clamp to the exposed seatpost below the saddle, a rider with a very low saddle position may not have enough post showing for the clamp to sit at a usable height. Tern's seatpost-mounted handhold selection guide covers this — check it if the saddle sits low on your frame.
Joyride Bars vs Flat Bars — which handhold?
The Sidekick Flat Bars Gen 3 ($125) are a straighter, more compact handhold with an integrated 4/5/6 mm Allen key — well matched to the Sidekick Seat Pad and passengers who sit close to the seatpost. The Joyride Bars Gen 3 ($105) reach back further and are the natural pairing for the Captain's Chair and for bigger passengers seated further rearward. Tern publishes a comparison guide for the seatpost handhold options — consult it alongside your seat choice before ordering.
