Tern Sidekick Seat Pad
A padded passenger seat for Tern cargo bike rear racks — clips on and off via KLICKfix Rackpack in seconds, water-resistant polyurethane leather, reflective accents for visibility. Up to two pads on the GSD; one on the HSD. Part of the Tern Passenger System.
The Tern Sidekick Seat Pad adds a padded seat to the rear rack of compatible Tern cargo bikes, turning the cargo platform into a comfortable passenger perch. It mounts via KLICKfix Rackpack — the same interface used by Tern's cargo bags and baskets — so the pad clips on and off in seconds without tools. When cargo use is needed, the pad comes off; when carrying a passenger, it goes back on. Polyurethane leather over foam handles weather without absorbing water, and reflective detailing improves visibility of the passenger from behind at night. The Sidekick Seat Pad is one component of the Tern Passenger System — carrying passengers safely requires the full setup specified in Tern's Passenger Guide.

The seat pad uses the same KLICKfix Rackpack interface as Tern's cargo bags. Twist-lock onto a compatible rear rack, twist-release to remove. No tools, no adjustment, no setup. The seat pad and a cargo bag are interchangeable on the same rack — switch between passenger and cargo configurations quickly.
Polyurethane leather + foam — padded and weather-ready
PU leather over foam gives cushioning without the water absorption of fabric. The surface wipes clean and sheds light rain — a rear rack seat is exposed to weather from below (road spray) and above. PU leather holds up to this; fabric would eventually saturate and degrade. The foam layer provides enough cushioning for regular urban distances.
Reflective accents — passenger visibility at night
The seat pad includes reflective detailing that returns light from behind. A passenger sitting on a rear rack is in a position that can reduce their rear visibility relative to a rider on a solo bike — the reflective accents compensate, making the pad (and by extension the passenger) visible to following traffic under headlights.
Two pads on GSD — one on HSD and Quick Haul
The GSD's longer rear platform accommodates two Sidekick Seat Pads side by side, allowing two passengers to ride simultaneously. The HSD and Quick Haul have a shorter rear deck and accept a single pad. Confirm your specific configuration via Tern's Passenger Guide — both the rack space and the bike's load rating must support the intended passenger setup.
140 cm / 10+ years — minimum passenger size
Tern recommends the Sidekick Seat Pad for passengers at least 140 cm (4'7") tall — roughly 10 years old and up, though individual variation means height is a better guide than age. Younger or smaller passengers may not have sufficient leg reach to sit safely on a rear rack seat. Consult Tern's Passenger Guide and, for children, a paediatrician if in doubt about suitability.
