    Storm Shield Gen 3 · All-Weather Canopy · Two Passengers · 140 cm Max · Nylon

    Tern Storm Shield

A one-piece weather canopy that fits over the Clubhouse and covers two passengers up to 140 cm tall, helmets included — it mounts to the Clubhouse and nothing else, and the Clubhouse generation has to match your bike.

    $366 CAD · each

The Storm Shield mounts to a Clubhouse, and on the GSD Gen 1 it must be the Clubhouse Gen 1 — not the Clubhouse+. Tern is explicit about the exception: installing it on a GSD Gen 1 with the Clubhouse+ "results in a series of clearance issues (especially for taller riders) and may compromise basic functionalities like opening/closing the rollup windows, or even damage the accessory." Later GSD generations need their own matching Clubhouse generation, so confirm the pairing with Tern's compatibility checker before ordering. A GSD Gen 1 setup also needs Sidekick Lower Decks ($95 per pair) for foot support and Cargo Hold 52 Panniers in Bucket Mode for leg protection. Carrying children requires the rest of the Passenger System regardless of canopy — see Tern's Passenger Guide. 2 passengers on the Clubhouse up to 140 cm (4'7") each Clubhouse required base 1.6 kg weight — 3.5 lb

The Storm Shield is the single-piece answer to weather on a GSD: a nylon canopy on a fibreglass tent-pole frame that goes over the Clubhouse and encloses both passengers, with enough headroom that helmets stay on. Where Tern's other canopy is a two-part system — a summer shade layer with a waterproof cover bought separately and snapped on — this is one item that does both jobs and stays on the bike. The pole structure is what makes that work: fibreglass has enough spring to hold the canopy's shape against a crosswind or the turbulence off a passing truck, which a soft cover over a bare frame does not. The trade-off is that it is a GSD accessory built around the Clubhouse, and the generation pairing is strict enough that ordering the wrong combination can damage the canopy.

Fibreglass poles hold the shape in wind

A canopy is a sail, and the gust off a passing truck is exactly when you want the structure over your kids to stay put. Sprung fibreglass poles keep the panels taut and stop the fabric collapsing inward onto a passenger's face, which is the failure mode of soft covers. It is the same reason tents use them rather than rigid rod.

Ventilation panel and removable sides for one canopy year-round

An enclosed canopy over two children fogs fast and turns stifling the moment the sun comes out. The vent panel keeps air moving in the rain, and the side panels come off entirely on good days so the same canopy works as shade in July. Without that you would be taking the whole structure off and on with the seasons.

140 cm of headroom, measured with helmets on

Two passengers up to 140 cm (4'7") fit with room for their helmets, which is roughly a nine or ten year old at the top of the range. That is a realistic ceiling to plan around: a child near 140 cm today has perhaps two seasons left under this canopy, and it is worth checking their standing height on the rack before committing $366 to it.

Tall riders need the seating checked, not just the canopy

Clearance between the rider's saddle and the front of the canopy is the constraint nobody anticipates. Tern's stated fix is the Sidekick Joyride Bars and Captain's Chair combo for riders of roughly 170–190 cm (5'7"–6'3"). The same clearance problem is what rules out the Clubhouse+ on a GSD Gen 1 — if you are at the tall end, sort the cockpit before you order the canopy.

Storm Shield, or Sun Shield plus Rain Shield?

Both cover passengers on a Clubhouse; they differ in structure and in what Tern promises. The Storm Shield ($366) is one piece, always mounted, 1.6 kg, and Tern calls it weather-resistant without publishing a waterproof rating. The Sun Shield ($310) plus Rain Shield ($262) is $572 for the pair, but splits into a light shade layer for summer and a cover rated to 12,000 mm that folds into a pannier at 0.66 kg and only goes on when rain is forecast. Choose the Storm Shield for a GSD ridden through wet months where a permanent, wind-stable canopy earns its keep; choose the pair if you want a published waterproof figure, ride mostly dry with occasional rain, or ride an Orox or Quick Haul Long, which the Storm Shield does not cover.
