Tern Cargo Hold 72 Panniers
The largest Cargo Hold panniers and the only ones built for the Orox — 72 litres each, 20 kg capacity per pannier, Bluesign 1000D nylon, Fidlock magnetic buckles, and three conversion modes. Reduce load by half on unpaved terrain. Requires Pannier Adapter Gen 2.
The Tern Cargo Hold 72 Panniers are the largest and highest-capacity bags in the Cargo Hold range, and the only ones purpose-built for the Orox adventure bike. At 72 litres per pannier and a 20 kg load limit — dramatically higher than the 6.8 kg limit of the Cargo Hold 52 — these are touring panniers in the full sense: sized and rated for multi-day loads, not daily commuting. Bluesign-certified 1000D nylon and full waterproofing handle extended outdoor exposure. Three modes cover the main use cases: Pannier Mode seals the bag via the rolled-and-buckled closure; Bucket Mode opens it wide for easy loading of bulky items; FlatFold collapses it flat for storage when not in use. A Fidlock magnetic buckle closes the top one-handed. The Orox-specific design means the panniers are shaped to the Orox's rack geometry and Stow Deck interface — they are not a universal fit for other Tern cargo bikes.
Highlights
20 kg per pannier — touring load capacity
The 20 kg per-pannier load limit is the defining specification that separates the Cargo Hold 72 from the rest of the Cargo Hold range. The Cargo Hold 52's limit is 6.8 kg per pannier; the 72's limit is 20 kg — nearly three times higher. This capacity is appropriate for multi-day bikepacking and touring loads: camping gear, food for multiple days, tools, clothing, and shelter. The Orox frame and fork geometry are specifically designed for this loading level; most bikes in the Tern range are not.
Orox only — not interchangeable with cargo bike panniers
The Cargo Hold 72 is built for the Orox's specific rack and Stow Deck geometry. The dimensions (660 × 385 × 200 mm) are larger and shaped differently than the Cargo Hold 28/37/52 series, which are designed for the GSD, HSD, Quick Haul, and Short Haul. Using Cargo Hold 72s on a non-Orox bike is not supported — the mounting interface, pannier dimensions, and load ratings are all matched to the Orox. If you have an Orox but need smaller panniers, the Cargo Hold 72 is the designed-for option.
~10 kg per pannier off-road — reduce by 50%
The 20 kg paved-road rating drops to approximately 10 kg per pannier on unpaved surfaces. Gravel, dirt tracks, cobblestones, and rooted singletrack all introduce vibration and impact loads far higher than tarmac — the dynamic loads on the pannier mounting points and bag structure multiply the effective weight significantly. An Orox loaded to 20 kg per pannier on a smooth road becomes severely overloaded at the same weight on a rough trail. Plan loads around the off-road limit from the start of any mixed-terrain route.
Three modes — Pannier, Bucket, FlatFold
Pannier Mode is the weather-sealed configuration: roll the top down, close the Fidlock buckle, and the bag is protected against rain for extended riding in wet conditions. Bucket Mode opens the top fully for loading — essential for a 72-litre bag where reaching into the bottom of a rolltop opening is impractical for the gear that lives in there. FlatFold collapses the empty bag for compact storage — relevant when camping and the panniers need to come off the bike at the end of a riding day.
Pannier Adapter Gen 2 — required, sold separately
Like the Cargo Hold 37 Gen 3 and 52 Gen 2, the Cargo Hold 72 mounts via the Pannier Adapter Gen 2 rather than conventional pannier hooks. The adapter must be installed on the Orox rack before the panniers can be fitted. It is sold separately. Confirm it is in stock and available for the Orox before ordering the panniers.
Cargo Hold range — where the 72 fits
The Cargo Hold range spans four sizes. The 28 ($138 each, NBD/HSD/Quick Haul/Short Haul) and 37 Gen 3 ($317/pair, most cargo bikes) are commute and everyday-cargo panniers with modest load limits. The 52 Gen 2 ($421/pair, two-passenger cargo bikes) adds volume for the GSD and similar. The 72 ($441/pair, Orox only) steps into a different use case entirely — adventure touring with 20 kg per-pannier capacity. They are not interchangeable across bike models or use cases.
