Tern Sidekick Wide Decks Gen 2

Integrated side deck extensions for the Tern GSD Gen 2 — widens the rear platform to 12 cm, 35 kg per deck (70 kg combined), slotted openings for cargo securing, and a left-side thru-axle cutout so the rear wheel can be removed without disassembling the decks.

$215 CAD · set of two

GSD Gen 2 only — not compatible with other GSD generations. The Sidekick Wide Decks Gen 2 are designed specifically for the GSD Gen 2 frame geometry and mounting points. They will not fit earlier GSD models. If carrying passengers on the decks, consult Tern's Passenger Guide for all required safety accessories before use. For a fold-out deck alternative with different capacity and mounting, see the Sidekick Doublewide Decks ($60). 35 kg per deck (77 lb) 70 kg / 154 lb combined 12 cm extended deck width 1.36 kg set weight (3 lb)

The Tern Sidekick Wide Decks Gen 2 extend the rear side platforms of the GSD Gen 2, widening them to 12 cm — wider than the stock deck — for improved foot support for passengers and a larger cargo surface. Corrosion-resistant aluminium construction holds 35 kg per deck (70 kg for the pair) and is built for daily use in all weather. Slotted openings running along the deck surface allow bungee cords, straps, and cargo nets to be threaded through and anchored, keeping loaded cargo from shifting. A cutout on the left deck aligns with the thru-axle — rear wheel removal for flat repairs or service does not require removing the decks first. Compatible with the Captain's Chair and Clubhouse+ for passenger configurations, and with Cargo Hold 37 and Cargo Hold 52 panniers for cargo use.

Widens rear deck to 12 cm — more surface for feet and cargo

The GSD Gen 2 rear platform is functional but narrow for passengers sitting with feet on the sides. The Wide Decks extend each side to 12 cm — enough width for a passenger's foot to sit flat and stable rather than perching on a narrow rail edge. For cargo use, the wider deck gives bags and boxes a more stable base and fewer tipping points at the sides.

Slotted openings — cargo securing without separate mounts

The deck surface has slots running along it. Bungee cords, cam straps, and cargo nets thread through these slots and anchor directly to the deck structure rather than needing separate attachment hooks or rail mounts. Cargo that doesn't have panniers or a specific bag can be strapped down directly to the deck — useful for irregular items, grocery bags, or anything else that needs a flat surface with tie-down points.

Thru-axle cutout — rear wheel off without removing the decks

Modern cargo bikes use thru-axles rather than quick-release skewers. Removing a thru-axle rear wheel requires access to the axle end on the left side of the bike. The left Wide Deck has a cutout aligned with this position — the thru-axle can be threaded out and the wheel removed while both decks remain installed. A flat tyre or wheel service doesn't require disassembling the deck setup.

Low cargo position — stability under load

The Wide Decks sit at axle height — lower than a rear rack platform. Low cargo placement keeps the centre of gravity down, which matters on a heavily loaded cargo bike. The GSD Gen 2 is built to carry significant weight; loading that weight low and close to the axle (via side decks) rather than high (via an elevated rack) improves handling and reduces swaying under load.

Captain's Chair, Clubhouse+, and pannier compatible

The Wide Decks work alongside the Captain's Chair and Clubhouse+ passenger seating systems — deck width provides the foot platform while the seating accessory handles the seat itself. Cargo Hold 37 and Cargo Hold 52 panniers also run alongside the Wide Decks, with the panniers hanging from the rack rails while the decks extend beneath and to the sides. The Storm Box Gen 1 is also recommended as a compatible cargo accessory.

Wide Decks Gen 2 vs Sidekick Doublewide Decks

Both are side deck accessories for GSD-family bikes, but they are different products. The Sidekick Doublewide Decks ($60) are fold-out platforms that require Lockstand Extensions and are rated at 50 kg per side (100 kg combined with QuadStruts). The Wide Decks Gen 2 ($215) are integrated fixed-position extensions for the GSD Gen 2 specifically, rated at 35 kg per deck (70 kg combined), with slotted cargo securing and thru-axle access. Verify which your GSD generation and use case requires.
