Tern Storm Box
A 160 L weatherproof rear compartment that takes 50 kg of cargo under one lid or two young children under the other — it needs a Clubhouse and a set of decks underneath it, and it does not fit the GSD Gen 1.
The Storm Box turns the open rack area of a GSD or Quick Haul Long into an enclosed compartment. What makes it unusual is that it ships with two lids and expects you to swap between them: the Cargo Lid closes the box over 160 L of shopping, tools, or kit and keeps rain off it, while the Kid Lid configures the same space to keep two young passengers warm and dry. Most cargo bikes force that choice at purchase — a box bike carries boxes, a passenger setup carries passengers. Here the box is the constant and the lid decides what it is for that week. The build reflects the double duty: a tarpaulin and ripstop nylon shell that shrugs off both weather and the abrasion of hard cargo. The catch is the mounting stack. The Storm Box is the top layer of Tern's Clubhouse Fort system, so it needs the Clubhouse and the decks below it before it has anywhere to sit.
Highlights
Two lids in the box, so the bike changes job in a minute
The Cargo Lid and the Kid Lid both come with the Gen 1 — there is no second purchase to unlock the other mode, which is not true of the Storm Box Gen 2 ($366), where the Kid Lid ships alone and the Cargo Lid is a $55 add-on. That matters for the household that does a school run in the morning and a hardware run at the weekend, because the alternative is either owning two setups or stripping a passenger installation off the rack every time you need to haul something.
160 L is a full car boot, and 50 kg is what fills it
Volume and weight limits usually run out at different times: a big box rated to 20 kg is full of pillows before it is heavy. At 160 L and 50 kg the Storm Box is matched for dense loads — a fortnight of groceries, a bag of cement, a load of tools — so you can fill the space without checking the rating first.
Tarpaulin shell with a ripstop nylon build
Tarpaulin is the waterproof, abrasion-resistant layer — the material of truck curtains and messenger bags, chosen because it survives being loaded with things that have corners. Ripstop nylon is woven so a puncture stays a puncture instead of running into a tear, which is what you want in a box that gets climbed into by children and jabbed by cargo in the same week.
Enclosed, so the load stops being your problem in the rain
Open panniers and a bare rack mean everything you carry needs its own weatherproofing and its own strapping down. A closed compartment removes both jobs: cargo goes in loose and stays dry, and a passenger sits inside the walls of the box rather than perched on top of a rack. It is also the difference between leaving the bike loaded outside a shop and carrying everything in with you.
Where the Storm Box sits in the Clubhouse Fort
Tern's all-weather passenger setup stacks in layers, and the Storm Box is the middle one. Below it: a Clubhouse and either Sidekick Wide Decks ($215) on a GSD Gen 2 or Stow Decks ($234) on a GSD Gen 3 or Quick Haul Long. Above it, optionally, a canopy — the Storm Shield ($366) for a fully enclosed GSD, or the Sun Shield ($310) with the Rain Shield ($262) added when it turns wet. If you ride an Orox or a GSD Gen 1, the Storm Box is not available to you and the Sun Shield plus Rain Shield pair is the weather-protection route. If you mainly need dry cargo rather than covered passengers, Cargo Hold panniers do that for a fraction of the stack.

Tern Storm Box
A 160 L weatherproof rear compartment that takes 50 kg of cargo under one lid or two young children under the other — it needs a Clubhouse and a set of decks underneath it, and it does not fit the GSD Gen 1.
$262 CAD · eachThe Storm Box fits three bikes, and each needs a Clubhouse and a set of decks before the box will mount. GSD Gen 2 takes it with a Clubhouse Gen 3 or Clubhouse+ plus Sidekick Wide Decks ($215 per pair). GSD Gen 3 and Quick Haul Long Gen 1 take it with a Clubhouse Gen 3 plus Stow Decks ($234 per set). Tern also specifies that the Clubhouse or Clubhouse+ must be installed with one of the rear bars — the curved Child Seat Expansion Bar or the Flat Bar. No other Tern is listed as compatible, including the GSD Gen 1, the Orox, and the HSD. Budget the whole stack, not the box alone, and carrying children in it requires the seats and restraints in Tern's Passenger Guide. 160 L cargo volume 50 kg load capacity — 110 lb Kids or cargo switchable — two lids
